FSSAI Calls on States to Strengthen Food Safety Checks at Tourist Hubs, Warehouses, and E-commerce Facilities
FSSAI's 45th CAC meeting called for enhanced food safety measures at tourist sites, increased e-commerce checks, and public awareness, aiming to train 25 lakh food handlers by 2026 under the Eat Right India initiative.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently held its 45th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting, emphasizing the need for stricter food safety protocols across popular tourist destinations nationwide. With peak tourist traffic expected from November through March, FSSAI urged States and Union Territories (UTs) to enhance food surveillance and inspections at these high-traffic areas to ensure both domestic and international visitors experience the highest safety standards.
A key recommendation was the deployment of "Food Safety on Wheels" mobile labs at tourist spots. These mobile units will be instrumental in conducting on-the-spot checks, ensuring that food sold at these destinations meets safety guidelines. FSSAI’s CEO, G Kamala Vardhana Rao, called upon Food Safety Commissioners to intensify inspections of warehouses and facilities used by e-commerce platforms, a sector seeing increasing demand during the tourism season. He also advised establishing clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for these facilities and for delivery personnel to enhance food handling safety.
The committee highlighted the importance of training Food Business Operators (FBOs) nationwide. Under the Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) initiative, FSSAI set an ambitious target of training 25 lakh food handlers by March 2026. This initiative aims to cover food handlers in university and hostel canteens, ensuring food safety standards are consistently maintained.
FSSAI also emphasized an integrated approach to food safety, urging collaboration among various ministries and stakeholders to create a comprehensive food safety framework. As part of the “Eat Right India” movement, the committee encouraged States/UTs to engage consumers in promoting healthier eating habits. Suggested initiatives included fairs, walkathons, and Nukkad Nataks (street plays) to raise awareness on safe food practices.
Over 60 key officials, including State Food Safety Commissioners, senior FSSAI representatives, and stakeholders from various sectors, participated in this significant meeting.
Their collective efforts are expected to strengthen food safety protocols, contributing to a safer, healthier experience for tourists and residents alike.
