The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is set to host the vibrant celebration of Ganga Utsav 2024 on November 4 at Chandi Ghat, Haridwar. This annual event commemorates the Ganga River's designation as the ‘National River’ and aims to raise awareness about river conservation, highlighting the profound cultural and spiritual significance of this mighty river. This year’s celebration marks the eighth edition of the festival and, for the first time, will take place on the riverbank itself, symbolizing a closer connection to Ganga’s essence. Additionally, the festival will expand across 139 districts within the Ganga basin states, with each state organizing a major event, led by its District Ganga Committees.

A Central Event with Prominent Leaders and Dignitaries

The centerpiece of Ganga Utsav 2024 in Haridwar will be inaugurated by Union Minister for Jal Shakti, C.R. Patil, and is expected to see distinguished guests, including Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Minister of State for Jal Shakti Shri Raj Bhushan Chaudhary, and Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary of the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Notable dignitaries from both Union and State Governments are also anticipated to attend, underscoring the importance of collective action for river preservation.

In a unique effort to connect people with Ganga's journey, the festival will feature the launch of the Ganga Women Rafting Expedition, a 50-day endeavor in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF). This expedition will cover nine major cities and towns, culminating at Ganga Sagar and aligning with various local river-based activities in the five main states of the Ganga basin. This rafting journey will be a visual representation of unity, endurance, and connection to the Ganga River’s essence.

Promoting Sustainable Cities through the River City Alliance

An exciting feature of this year’s Ganga Utsav will be its model presentation for celebrating rivers, attracting participation from 145 river cities united under the River City Alliance. This alliance aims to foster urban river health through river-sensitive urban planning, which envisions pollution-free, continually flowing rivers that contribute to water security and sustainable city development. Through the festival, the alliance seeks to reinforce the bond between urban communities and rivers, encouraging a future where rivers are integral to city life and culture.

Engaging Youth and Communities with "Ganga Samvad" and More

At the heart of Ganga Utsav 2024 will be "Ganga Samvad," a session that will bring together prominent figures, religious leaders, and conservation advocates to discuss ways to inspire the youth towards river conservation. This dialogue aims to foster a deeper connection between young people and Ganga, encouraging them to participate in environmental stewardship. A technical session will further engage experts on river rejuvenation strategies, sharing insights into sustainable river management.

Cultural and Educational Activities for All

The event promises a blend of educational and entertaining activities, including Ghat Par Haat, where local stalls will showcase various aspects of the Namami Gange initiative. For children, a range of engaging activities, such as quizzes, film screenings, puppet shows, magic shows, and drawing competitions, are planned to instill the value of river conservation from a young age. Street plays (Nukkad Nataks) will address the youth, stressing the importance of keeping rivers clean. An exclusive cultural session will also celebrate the diverse histories and traditions associated with Indian rivers.

The festival will feature an exhibition dedicated to Namami Gange, providing insights into the initiative’s ongoing efforts and achievements in river conservation. A small food festival will offer participants a taste of regional cuisine, adding a culinary touch to the celebrations and allowing communities to experience Ganga’s rich cultural tapestry through its food traditions.

Through the Ganga Utsav, NMCG aims to foster a stronger bond between people and the Ganga, encouraging collective responsibility towards its preservation. The event reaffirms the Ganga’s central role in Indian civilization, aiming to deepen public understanding of its historical and cultural heritage. Alongside celebrating Ganga’s legacy, a key focus of the festival is to spread awareness about cleanliness, uniting communities in efforts to restore the Ganga River to its pristine state and preserve its dynamic, sacred character.
