Shivraj Singh Chouhan reaffirmed the essential role of farmers, emphasizing that while factories can produce many goods, the world relies on farmers for essential staples like wheat, rice. He called for collective efforts to ensure the continued success and welfare of the farming community.
Union Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, engaged in a meaningful discussion with farmers in Patna, Bihar on August 23, 2024. Chouhan reiterated Prime Minister Modi's commitment, expressed from the Red Fort, to work three times faster for the welfare of farmers across the country. He commended the Government of Bihar, including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and the Agriculture Department, for their relentless efforts in supporting the farming community.
During his visit, he marveled at the diverse agricultural products on display, such as makhana, rice, honey, maize, and tea, and lauded the farmers of Bihar for their remarkable achievements despite the challenges of small landholdings. Highlighting the Prime Minister's campaign to double farmers' income, Chouhan outlined six key strategies he is focusing on.
The first is increasing agricultural production, for which high-quality seeds are essential. He noted that while production levels are already commendable, there is still room for growth. He praised the Prime Minister's initiative to provide farmers with 109 species of seeds from 65 crops, including varieties that are water-efficient and climate-resilient.
Chouhan also underscored his commitment to reducing production costs for farmers. He acknowledged the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi and the availability of affordable loans for fertilizers through the Kisan Credit Card (KCC). The third key focus is ensuring that farmers receive fair prices for their produce. He highlighted Bihar's success with export-quality makhana, which has significantly boosted farmers' income, and promised to advocate for the establishment of related offices in Bihar.
The Union Minister further emphasized the government's focus on agricultural diversification, promoting high-value crops alongside traditional ones. He also stressed the importance of food processing in elevating Bihar's agricultural status, not just within India, but on the global stage. Chouhan recognized the immense talent in Bihar and expressed confidence that harnessing this potential could position the state as a leader both nationally and internationally.
Addressing the need for sustainable farming practices, Chouhan called for innovative approaches to reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, which can harm soil fertility and health. He highlighted the disappearance of earthworms due to excessive chemical use, noting their vital role in maintaining soil health.
Chouhan announced that under the Prime Minister's leadership, a mission for natural farming is being launched, which promises not only to maintain but to enhance agricultural production.
