Government of Kerala Plans to Revitalise Plantation Sector

P. Rajeev, Minister for Law, Industries and Coir, Government of Kerala has revealed plans to implement comprehensive strategies aimed at optimising asset utilisation sustainably, as well as establishing a separate brand for high-quality products to meet global demand.

Addressing Sector Challenges

Kerala currently boasts a 46 percent share of all plantations in India, making it an important contributor to the state's economy and employment landscape. Despite its significance, the sector grapples with pressing issues that demand collective attention and resolution, according to the minister.

IIM-K's In-Depth Study

The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM-K) has been entrusted with conducting an in-depth study on the current status of the plantation sector. The findings, expected in two months, will inform further governmental measures to address sector challenges.

Adding to the government's arsenal, the $285 million World Bank-aided Kerala Climate Resilient Agri-Value Chain Modernisation (KERA) project will play a pivotal role in modernising the state's food and nutritional security. Specific components of the project earmarked for the plantation sector aim to bolster government support for plantation rejuvenation, as highlighted by the Minister.

New Crop Possibilities

A notable policy intervention under consideration involves permitting the cultivation of commercial crops beyond the currently specified ones on plantation lands. This move aims to diversify agricultural practices within the sector, enhancing its resilience and economic viability.

Building on the success of the inaugural event in 2023, the second edition of the Kerala Plantation Expo is set to take place in Kochi from January 20 to 22. This expo serves as a crucial platform to spotlight the sector's brand potential and showcase a diverse array of products and services to meet both global and domestic demand.
