Government continues to work closely with state authorities, railways, and fertilizer companies to resolve localized supply issues and ensure the expeditious distribution of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP). Despite significant geopolitical challenges, the Department of Fertilizers has implemented proactive measures to secure adequate supplies of DAP and other fertilizers nationwide for the Rabi 2024-25 season.

India heavily relies on imported DAP, which constitutes 60% of its total availability, with domestic production also dependent on imported raw materials. This year, disruptions such as the Red Sea crisis and reduced exports from major suppliers impacted DAP shipments. The crisis forced the diversion of vessels carrying essential materials like phosphoric acid via longer routes, extending voyage times and straining the supply chain.

However, the government's swift action has mitigated these challenges. Between October and November 2024, over 17 lakh tons of DAP were imported and distributed across states. An additional 6.50 lakh tons of DAP were domestically produced, bringing the total supply during this period to 23 lakh tons, excluding existing buffer stocks.

In a significant development, major agricultural states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have increased their use of NPKS (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Sulfur) fertilizers by 500,000 tons compared to the previous Rabi season. Nationwide, NPKS consumption has risen by 10 lakh tons.

As of now, the combined availability of DAP stands at 34.81 lakh metric tons, while NPKS stocks have reached 55.14 lakh metric tons.
