Green Hydrogen Definition Announced by India

The Green Hydrogen Standard for India defines a requirement where the emission limit is set at an average of 2 kg CO2 equivalent per kg H2 over a 12-month period.

In a pivotal stride towards advancing the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Indian government has officially introduced the Green Hydrogen Standard.

Developed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), this standard lays out the essential emission benchmarks that hydrogen production must adhere to in order to qualify as 'Green', indicating its origin from renewable resources. This classification encompasses hydrogen generated through both electrolysis and biomass-based methods.

Following extensive consultations with various stakeholders, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has opted to categorize Green Hydrogen as hydrogen with well-to-gate emissions (encompassing processes like water treatment, electrolysis, gas purification, and hydrogen compression) not exceeding 2 kg CO2 equivalent per kg H2.

The notification stipulates that the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy will formulate a comprehensive framework detailing the approach for gauging, reporting, overseeing, on-site authentication, and certification of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

Furthermore, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power has been designated as the pivotal authority responsible for accrediting agencies tasked with supervising, validating, and certifying projects focused on the production of Green Hydrogen.

The unveiling of the Green Hydrogen Standard delivers much-needed clarity to the Indian Green Hydrogen community, a development that was widely anticipated.

With this directive in effect, India positions itself as one of the pioneering nations to articulate a concrete definition for Green Hydrogen, solidifying its commitment to sustainable hydrogen production.
