Hunger, Nutrition & Sustainable Agriculture Take Center Stage at G20 Talks in Chandigarh

On the final day of the Agricultural Deputies Conference in Chandigarh on March 31, the G20 delegates focused on hunger, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture.

On March 29, the three-day summit began. It was also said that millet grain research would be conducted on a worldwide scale. "There were conversations about agricultural digitization and food security programmes. Then, on the matter of millets, there was agreement that research be conducted," stated Secretary Manoj Ahuja.

"Furthermore, sustainable agriculture was a priority, particularly Agro-ecological approaches to it," he continued. The second Agricultural Deputies Meeting was held here in Chandigarh on the third and final day. The day began with a discussion of the outcome document, led by Shubha Thakur, Joint Secretary (Crops), and continued by Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Additional Secretary, DA&FW.

Chandigarh has been chosen to host two meetings, the first of which will be the International Financial Architecture Working Group on January 30-31 and the second on agricultural concerns in March.

The day continued with two successive sessions devoted to drafting the communiqué by G20 member countries, which were characterized by lengthy deliberations. 

After the session, Secretary, DA&FW, Manoj Ahuja addressed the press and said that he hopes discussion on the draught communiqué and the deliberations will pave the way for agreement on focus areas, which include food security and nutrition, climate smart agriculture, inclusive agriculture value chains and food systems and digitisation for agricultural transformation, keeping the spirit of 'One Earth, One Family and One Future'.

Representatives from other invited countries and international organizations also shared their perspectives during the session, contributing to an open discussion about the communiqué-drafting process.
