ICAR-CIFRI Signs License Agreement with M/s Glaucus Agrochem for ‘CIFRI FISH Tanavhari’

ICAR-CIFRI Signs License Agreement with M/s Glaucus Agrochem for ‘CIFRI FISH Tanavhari’

A groundbreaking sedative and anaesthetic herbal formulation called CIFRI Fish Tanavhari has emerged as a promising solution for fish handling and transportation in both laboratory and field conditions. This innovative product, developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), promises a safe and effective method without adverse effects on fish health.

CIFRI Fish Tanavhari is derived from edible plant-based materials, ensuring environmental safety and cost-effectiveness. Being herbal in nature, it is designed to facilitate fish handling without causing any side effects or stress on aquatic life. The product is trademarked under the ownership of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

Licensing and Commercialization

An important step was taken on April 16, 2024, as ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore, Kolkata, Agrinnovate India Ltd., New Delhi, and M/s Glaucus Agrochem Pvt Limited, Kolkata, signed a Transfer License Agreement for the technology behind CIFRI Fish Tanavhari. This agreement grants a non-exclusive license to manufacture and sell the product within India for five years.

The commercialization process was facilitated by Agrinnovate India Ltd., the commercial arm of ICAR, reflecting a strategic move towards bringing innovative agricultural technologies to market.

Dr. Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science) at ICAR, New Delhi, commended the CIFRI team for their pioneering work on CIFRI Fish Tanavhari. He emphasized the technology's potential to transform fish seed, live fish, and brooder transportation, preserving quality without compromising on fish health.

Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore, extended congratulations to the scientists involved in developing this technology. Highlighting the institute's track record in commercialization, he underscored the significance of CIFRI Fish Tanavhari in reducing fish seed mortality during transportation and maintaining the quality of table fish during transit.

Industry Perspectives

Dr. Praveen Malik, Chief Executive Officer of Agrinnovate India Ltd., emphasized the natural and safe composition of CIFRI Fish Tanavhari. He expressed optimism about the technology's potential to revolutionize fish transportation practices across India.

Sariful Islam, Managing Director of Glaucus Agrochem Pvt Limited, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the economic and farmer-friendly attributes of the technology. This marks the third technology licensed by ICAR-CIFRI to his company, underlining a successful partnership aimed at advancing aquaculture and fisheries practices in India.
