ICAR-CMFRI’s Research on Coral Reefs Wins Hasmukh Shah Memorial Award 2023
Alvin Anto of ICAR-CMFRI received the Hasmukh Shah Memorial Award 2023 for his research on the resilience of coral reefs in the Lakshadweep islands and their vulnerability to climate change and human-induced threats.
Alvin Anto, a young professional at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), has garnered national acclaim by clinching the prestigious Hasmukh Shah Memorial Award for Ecological Studies in the research category for the year 2023.
This distinguished accolade, accompanied by a ₹2 lakh cash prize and a certificate of recognition, recognizes his commendable research endeavours focusing on the resilience of coral reefs in the Lakshadweep islands. His work sheds light on the escalating threats faced by these vital ecosystems, stemming from climate change and various human-induced factors.
The Hasmukh Shah Memorial Award, established by the Gujarat Ecology Society and sponsored by the Kachnar Trust, seeks to acknowledge and reward individuals who have made substantial contributions to addressing and mitigating urgent sustainability or social issues through innovative environmental, technical, or social solutions, as communicated by CMFRI.
Anto, an ardent ocean enthusiast and a certified dive master through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, has spearheaded numerous underwater surveys, with a particular focus on coral reefs and the associated marine life in India's coastal regions and islands.
