ICAR-IISR’s Innovative Formulation Helps Farmers Control Soil Acidity & Boost Crop Yields
Tricholime is an innovative granular lime-based formulation developed by ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, seamlessly integrating lime and Trichoderma to simplify soil acidity control and promote optimal crop growth.
ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research (ICAR-IISR) in Kozhikode has developed a granular lime-based Trichoderma formulation, named ‘Tricholime’. Led by a team of innovative scientists including Dr. V Srinivasan, Dr. R Praveena, Dr. R Dinesh, and Dr. S J Eapen, this formulation marks a significant advancement in agricultural technology.
The primary aim of Tricholime is to simplify the process of soil acidity control for farmers, a critical factor in ensuring optimal crop yields. Soil acidity, if left unaddressed, can severely impede the availability of essential nutrients to plants, ultimately hampering crop productivity. While lime has conventionally been utilized to tackle soil acidity, the simultaneous application of lime and beneficial microorganisms like Trichoderma has been a logistical challenge for farmers. Traditionally, farmers had to wait for a considerable period, typically two to three weeks, before introducing other beneficial microorganisms into the soil.
Trichoderma, renowned for its efficacy as a fungal biocontrol agent, has demonstrated its ability to suppress various soil-borne plant pathogens, making it a preferred choice as a biopesticide and biofertilizer in crop cultivation. Recognizing the potential of Trichoderma and the limitations posed by traditional lime applications, the scientists at ICAR-IISR embarked on the development of Tricholime, a pioneering formulation that seamlessly integrates lime and Trichoderma.
What sets Tricholime apart is its ability to eliminate the need for a cumbersome two-step process. This innovative lime-based formulation not only neutralizes soil acidity but also facilitates plant growth and shields crops from soil-borne pathogens, all in a single application. Furthermore, Tricholime contributes to improving the physical condition of the soil, enhancing the availability of secondary nutrients, and boosting soil microbial activity.
The significance of Tricholime lies in its capacity to address soil acidity while simultaneously providing bio agents, thereby promoting optimal plant growth and nutrient uptake. Moreover, the formulation has the potential to foster the growth of beneficial microbes in the soil, further enhancing soil health. Unlike conventional methods, Tricholime streamlines the application of Trichoderma and lime, offering farmers a convenient and effective solution for their agricultural needs.
The institute envisions extending the technology behind Tricholime to incorporate other beneficial bioagents, paving the way for the development of innovative products that support sustainable organic farming practices. With Tricholime, ICAR-IISR has not only revolutionized soil management practices but has also opened new avenues for enhancing agricultural productivity and promoting environmental sustainability.
