IMD Issues Cold Wave & Dense Fog Warning For Northwest & Central India for Next 4-5 Days

The temperature will fall by two to four degrees Celcius over Northwest and adjoining Central India during the next four to five days and by two to three degrees Celcius over most parts of East India and Maharashtra during next four days, as per the predictions by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD Issues Cold Wave & Dense Fog Warning

According to the India Meteorological Department, the temperature will drop by two to four degrees Celsius throughout Northwest and adjoining Central India during the next four to five days, and by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over most parts of East India and Maharashtra over the next four days. 

Cold Wave and Fog Warning: 

  • Minimum temperatures will fall by 2-4° Celsius over most parts of Northwest and adjoining Central India, as well as Gujarat State, during the next four to five days and by 2-3° Celsius over most parts of East India and Maharashtra over the next four days. 

  • Cold Wave/Severe Cold Wave conditions over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Saurashtra, and Kutch from December 17 to 21; in north Rajasthan from December 18 to 21; over western Uttar Pradesh from December 19 to 21; and over Gujarat on December 19 and 20, 2021. 

  • Dense/Very dense fog in isolated pockets across Punjab and Haryana on December 17 and 18; also over northwest Rajasthan, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on December 17, 2021. 

  • Ground frost conditions in isolated pockets during morning hours are highly possible throughout Saurashtra and Kutch, Punjab, and Haryana during the next four days. 

Rainfall Forecast:  

  • The Western Disturbance, a cyclonic circulation, is located between 3.1 and 7.8 km above mean sea level across north Pakistan and neighboring territories. Light to moderate rainfall/snowfall in isolated locations is expected across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the next two days, with isolated light rainfall over northern parts of Punjab and Haryana on December 16.

  • Light to moderate rainfall is highly probable over Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikaland Kerala-Mahe during the next five days; over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on December 20. 

  • Dry weather is expected to prevail over the remaining areas of the country for the next five days.

Sea Warning: 

A cyclonic circulation lies over Equatorial Indian Ocean to the south of Sri Lanka and extends up to 5.8 km above sea level.

  • Under its influence, a Low Pressure Area is likely to form over the Equatorial Indian Ocean & adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal around December 17. 

  • From December 17 to 20, 2021, there will be light to moderate rainfall in a few/many spots over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with heavy rainfall over the Nicobar Islands on December 20, 2021.
