India has made significant strides in the export of mangoes during the first five months of the current fiscal year, 2023-24, thanks to the relentless efforts of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The nation has recorded a substantial increase in mango exports, with a total value of USD 47.98 million, marking a remarkable 19 percent growth compared to the previous fiscal year, when mango exports stood at USD 40.33 million for the same period.
This impressive growth is the result of a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and APEDA. In the fiscal year 2022-23, India exported 22,963.78 metric tons of mangoes, generating revenue of USD 48.53 million. In contrast, during the current fiscal year from April to August, India exported a substantial 27,330.02 metric tons of mangoes, with a total export value of USD 47.98 million.
As part of their joint initiative to promote mango exports for the 2023 season, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and APEDA extended an invitation to the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) inspector to oversee the preclearance of mangoes at irradiation facilities located in Vashi, Nashik, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad.
India has particularly excelled in the export of Indian mangoes to the United States, achieving a 19 percent increase in comparison to the previous fiscal year. In the first five months of the current fiscal year, India exported a substantial 2043.60 metric tons of Indian mangoes to the USA. Beyond the United States, India's dedicated efforts have also led to the export of mangoes to other countries, including 43.08 metric tons to Japan, 110.99 metric tons to New Zealand, 58.42 metric tons to Australia, and 4.44 metric tons to South Africa- a new export destination.
Furthermore, as part of their commitment to expanding mango exports, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and APEDA invited inspectors from South Korea to oversee preclearance processes. This initiative enabled India to export 18.43 metric tons of mangoes after treatment at an authorized Vapour Heat Treatment facility under the joint supervision of the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine, and Storage (DPPQS), India, and the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA), South Korea.
In 2022-23, there was a significant uptick in mango exports, with India successfully exporting mangoes to 41 different countries, including new markets such as Iran, Mauritius, the Czech Republic, and Nigeria. APEDA's dedication to promoting Indian mango exports extended to international events as well.
The organization participated in the Seoul Food & Hotel Show to showcase Indian mangoes and stimulate their export. As part of the celebrations for India's 75 years of Independence (Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav), APEDA facilitated the export of 75 different eastern varieties of mangoes to Bahrain, including five Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged varieties from the eastern region of India.
To further boost mango exports, APEDA organized mango promotion programs and festivals in collaboration with Indian embassies in various countries. In Brussels, APEDA and the Embassy of India held a mango tasting event, featuring four different mango varieties, including Amrapalli, Banganapalli, Kesar, and Himsagar, alongside delightful dishes like mango lassi and mango pudding.
Throughout 2023, APEDA undertook several initiatives to promote the export of Indian mangoes to international markets. In Malaysia, APEDA, in collaboration with the High Commission of India, Kuala Lumpur, organized a mango promotion program that showcased the Kesar and Banaganapalli mango varieties.
