International Coffee Day 2019: Know About the Coffee Growing Regions in India

Coffee is an indispensible partner in our every day journey of life. It adds color in our boring life, helps us complete an important task when we feel sleepy and is our best companion during office hours.  Coffee has some incredible powers which have the ability to jumpstart our day and spark amazing conversations with people.  

International Coffee Day is celebrated all over the world on 1 October every year. But moreover, this day is important to recognize and celebrate millions farmers across the world who do hard work to grow and supply this amazing beverage to us. As per report, coffee is the second most traded commodity on earth after oil! 

Let’s know about the major coffee produced regions in India and about Indian Coffee farmers. 

As per report, Coffee production in India is dominated in the hill tracts of Southern states including Karnataka accounting for 71%, followed by Kerala with 21% and Tamil Nadu (5% of overall production with 8,200 tonnes.

Coffee Plantations in India

Chikmagalur- 

‘Chikmagalur’ is known as ‘the coffee land of Karnataka’ where coffee was first introduced. Chikmagalur is one of the famous hill stations in Karnataka state which is located in the foothills of Mullayanagiri range. 

Its geography and climate makes it suitable for coffee plantation and make it one of the largest coffee estates in Karnataka followed by Kodagu, coorg and Hassan. Mullayanagiri is the highest peak of Karnataka situated in the Baba Budan Giri Range of the Western Ghats and tallest peak between the Himalayas and the Nilgiris,known as best place for trekking in Karnataka. 

Yercaud- 

It’s a small hill station of Tamil Nadu state which is located in the Salem District. Yercaud is situated in the Shevaroys range of hills in the Eastern Ghats and got its name due to forest near the lake mean to Lake Forest. 

It’s known as the best coffee forests in India due to its cool climate. Coonoor and Kodaikanal are other places in Tamil Nadu which are known for coffee plantation in India, Nilgiris District is also known for tea cultivation. 

Araku 

It is a hill station of Andhra Pradesh which is in Visakhapatnam district, in the Eastern Ghats of India inhabited by different types of tribes. Coffee Plantation in Araku is known for its first tribal growers’ organic coffee brand. Coffee cultivation industry is secondary here, as pepper and rubber are cultivated by the tribal all around the state. 

Daringbadi 

Moreover, it is known as the Kashmir of Orissa which is located in the hill region of Orissa and the only hill station of the state. Daringbadi is one of the youngest coffee plantation regions in India which is followed by Chintapalli, Himachal Pradesh and Assam. 

Koraput district in Orissa is another place known for most traded commodities, the rich coffee plantation. 

Let’s appreciate the Coffee farmers of India who worked really hard to make our day a joyous one with our cup of coffee. We need to encourage and need more entrepreneurs like the late VG Siddhartha, the demise CCD owner, ‘Coffee King’, who had lifted India’s Coffee fame to another level and contributed a lot to Coffee farmers and farming.
