Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Faction Supports Farmers’ Protest; Says Taliban Must Uphold Human Rights

On Saturday, the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH-Maulana Mahmood Madani) group published a statement on Afghanistan and the continuing farmers' protest.

According to the statement, the group hopes that the Taliban not only protects Afghans' human rights, but also ensures that Afghanistan is not used to strike another country.

“The working committee expresses the hope that the country's new masters, the Taliban, who liberated the country from foreign intervention and presence after decades of struggle and enormous sacrifices, will respect people's human rights in light of Islamic values and the Prophet's traditions, and will treat all sections of Afghan society fairly. It also hopes that the new rulers would develop good relations with other nations in the region, particularly with India, with which it has long-standing cultural and civilisational ties, and that they will not allow any country to use their soil against them,” the statement said.

The statement also added, “as shown by the contemporary construction of the Afghan Parliament, infrastructure projects around the country, and national highways, India had played a significant part in the creation of the new Afghanistan.”

The Taliban have been asked by JUH to preserve bilateral ties with India. Members of the committee also addressed the continuing farmers' movement in depth and pledged their continued support.

“Farmers have the constitutional and basic right to organise protest movements in order to get their demands met. However, rather than responding to their demands, the present administration is attempting to suppress the movement. Even the Supreme Court has acknowledged in its ruling that farmers have a basic right to organise a peaceful protest, and we all have a responsibility to preserve it,” the JUH added.

In addition, the JUH overwhelmingly re-elected current president Maulana Mahmood Madani to a new term.
