Kisan Diwas 2023: Discover the Importance and History of 'National Farmer's Day'

'National Farmer's Day', or Kisan Diwas, is an annual celebration held on December 23 across India, dedicated to recognizing and honoring the invaluable contributions of farmers. This special day pays tribute to the legacy of Choudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India, whose birth anniversary is commemorated on this occasion.

States with a significant agricultural presence, such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh, actively participate in festivities and events that highlight the vital role played by the farming community in shaping the nation's prosperity. On this day, various initiatives, ceremonies, and programs are organized to express gratitude to farmers and raise awareness about the challenges they face.

Farmers play a crucial role in ensuring food production to prevent hunger and starvation-related deaths. Despite their relentless efforts, a significant number of farmers face numerous challenges, including the struggle to secure at least two meals a day. Chaudhary Charan Singh

Chaudhary Charan Singh, a revered Kisan (farmer) leader, left a strong mark on Indian agriculture during his tenure as the Prime Minister, serving from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980. Renowned for his deep understanding of farmers' concerns, he authored influential books addressing agricultural issues and proposed impactful solutions to enhance the lives of those working in the agrarian sector.

He introduced various welfare schemes designed to uplift the agricultural community and improve their socio-economic conditions. His commitment to the welfare of farmers manifested in practical initiatives that aimed to alleviate their struggles and empower them.

In recognition of Chaudhary Charan Singh's enduring legacy and dedication to the farming community, the Indian government, in 2001, officially declared Kisan Diwas, to be observed on his birth anniversary.

Building upon the legacy of India's second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, who coined the iconic slogan 'JAI JAWAN JAI KISAN' (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer), Chaudhary Charan Singh emerged as a devoted leader committed to prioritizing the welfare of farmers.
