Pesticides are chemicals are made to kill or control pests, insects, weeds, fungi, microbes and rodents. There are many pesticides that have been found to be dangerous to human, animal health and also to the environment. Since pesticides are used in many sectors like agriculture, food industry, forestry etc. they can put the workers engaged in these occupations at risk of severe poisoning or occupational diseases. Definition of Pesticides according to the Food & Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO):

Pesticide is any substance or a mixture of substances intended for preventing, controlling, or destroying any insect or bug, including vectors of human or animal disease, unwanted species of plants or animals causing damage or interfering with the production, processing, storage, transport or marketing of food, agri-commodities, wood & wood products/animal feedstuffs, or substances that may be administered to animals for controlling insects, arachnids in or on their bodies. The term includes substances made for use as a plant growth regulator, defoliant, desiccant, or agent for tapering fruit or preventing premature fall & substances applied to crops before or after the harvest to protect the commodity from deterioration during storage & transport.
