Meghalaya has taken a significant step towards promoting organic farming by establishing its own APEDA-certified organic certification body, the Meghalaya State Organic Certification Body (MSOCB). This makes it the second state in the North East, after Sikkim, to have such an entity. The MSOCB, operating under the Bio-Resources Development Centre (BRDC) and the Planning Department, is now certified under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP).

Previously, farmers from Meghalaya had to rely on organic certification agencies located in distant regions such as Western and Southern India. With the establishment of MSOCB, the certification process is now more accessible and streamlined for local farmers. This will not only simplify the process but also reduce the cost and time involved in obtaining certification, allowing farmers to focus on enhancing the quality of their produce.

The certification from MSOCB is crucial for farmers aiming to meet organic standards, which are essential for entering premium domestic and international markets. Certified organic products typically fetch higher prices, which could significantly improve the income of local farmers and boost the state's agricultural economy.

Additionally, the establishment of MSOCB aligns with the state’s vision to support sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural practices. By promoting organic farming, Meghalaya is not only enhancing the livelihood of its farmers but also contributing to environmental conservation efforts.

This development strengthens Meghalaya’s position in the growing organic agriculture sector, providing its farmers with better market opportunities and enabling them to compete on a national and global level.
