Nano-DAP Gets Government Approval for Commercial Use

The agriculture ministry has approved the commercial release of Nano-diammonium phosphate (Nano-DAP) for the upcoming Kharif sowing season, which will be a game changer and reduce subsidy.

The difference between the actual cost and the prices farmers pay for each bag of DAP is borne by the central government.

One bottle of Nano-DAP would cost around Rs 600, which is half the price of the traditional 50kg DAP bag it will replace. According to sources, the notification for commercial use will be issued within the next few days.

Iffco will initially offer the product to farmers' cooperatives, and Coromandel International has also applied for Nano-DAP approval. Farmers currently pay Rs 1,350 for a bag of conventional DAP at a subsidized price, while the actual cost is Rs 4,000.

The difference between the actual cost and the prices farmers pay for each bag of DAP is borne by the central government. According to sources in the fertilizer ministry, they had been waiting for the approval, and now that it has arrived, it will reduce India's reliance on imports to meet domestic demand. Imports supply more than half of the domestic DAP demand.

"The Nano-DAP will be available before the Kharif season," a senior government official said. Only Nano-Urea is currently used in farming, and one 500ml bottle of Nano-Urea replaces a 50kg bag of conventional urea.

Union Fertiliser Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated in December last year that with the increased use of Nano-Urea and Nano-DAP, the government's fertiliser subsidy could be significantly reduced over the next few years.

Last month, the minister also stated that India will decide the price of imported DAP in 2024 and that a few countries that supply the fertilizer will be unable to do so because India is focusing on alternative fertilizers.
