Ministry of Finance, in a recent update, shared that these projects have boosted processing and preservation capacity by 428.04 lakh metric tonnes annually, creating 13.42 lakh jobs and benefiting 51.24 lakh farmers.
Ahead of Union Budget 2025, Ministry of Finance has recently provided an update that 1,646 food processing projects have been sanctioned so far under various sub-schemes of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY). This flagship initiative plays a pivotal role in the government’s mission to modernize India’s agriculture and food processing sectors by developing advanced infrastructure and ensuring efficient supply chain management from farms to retail outlets.
PMKSY, a Central Sector Scheme, has been instrumental in promoting the growth of the food processing sector by providing better returns to farmers, reducing agricultural produce wastage, and enhancing the export potential of processed foods. The scheme is backed by a comprehensive approach that includes private and public investments in post-harvest activities such as aggregation, modern storage, efficient supply chains, and processing.
As of December 18, 2024, a total of 1,646 projects under the PMKSY have been sanctioned, with an overall investment of Rs 31,830.23 crore, of which Rs 22,722.55 crore comes from private stakeholders. These projects have contributed to the creation of a processing and preservation capacity of 428.04 lakh metric tonnes annually, generated 13.42 lakh employment opportunities, and extended benefits to 51.24 lakh farmers.
Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) implements Central Sector Umbrella Scheme Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) since 2016-17.
PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Yojana, a component of PMKSY introduced in 2020-21, focuses on supporting micro food processing enterprises in the unorganized sector. By December 18, 2024, over 3.10 lakh self-help groups had received seed capital support, while credit linkage subsidies had been extended to 1,14,388 individuals. This initiative provides financial, technical, and business support for enterprise upgradation.
PMKSY includes several sub-schemes, such as Mega Food Parks, Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure, and Agro Processing Clusters, all of which contribute to the development of modern preservation and processing infrastructure.
Ministry of Finance has also shared updates on initiatives aimed at enhancing food processing infrastructure in the MSME sector. As part of the budget announcement for 2024-25, financial support was allocated for establishing 50 multi-product food irradiation units. To facilitate this, an Expression of Interest (EOI) was issued in August 2024 under the Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure Scheme of PMKSY. In response, 20 project proposals were received and are currently undergoing scrutiny and evaluation in line with the scheme’s guidelines.
Additionally, progress under Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the food processing industry was highlighted. Ministry revealed that 133 companies are currently participating in the scheme, which has successfully attracted investments worth Rs 8,910 crore to date. Incentives amounting to Rs 1,084 crore have been disbursed across 85 eligible cases.
Furthermore, the initiative has created approximately 2.89 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities, reinforcing its impact on the food processing sector and overall economic growth.
