PM Modi Installs 'Sengol' in Lok Sabha Chamber of New Parliament Building
The Multi-Faith Prayer Ceremony was conducted to foster religious inclusivity and unity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and several Cabinet ministers, participated in a momentous 'Sarv-dharma' prayer ceremony at the New Parliament Building.
The new Parliament Building stands as a symbol of India's rich diversity, with material sourced from various regions across the country. The sandstone used in its construction was procured from Samthura in Rajasthan, while the Ashoka Chakras adorned in both houses of Parliament were obtained from Indore.
During the ceremony, PM Modi installed the sacred 'Sengol' in the Lok Sabha chamber, accompanied by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The 'Sengol' was handed over to the Prime Minister by Adheenam seers.
Notably, this revered item was originally accepted by India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, at his residence on the night of August 14, 1947. As a mark of respect and to signify the commencement of the new Parliament building's inauguration, PM Modi prostrated before the 'Sengol' and sought blessings from priests representing various adheenams, holding the holy sceptre in his hand.
The newly constructed Parliament building has been meticulously designed to accommodate 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 384 members in the Rajya Sabha. The Lok Sabha chamber will also host joint sessions of both Houses.
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament building on December 10, 2020, and its completion represents a significant milestone in India's democratic journey.
The 'Sarv-dharma' prayer ceremony held at the new Parliament building serves as a powerful testament to India's commitment to religious harmony and unity among its diverse populace.
It exemplifies the nation's resolve to celebrate and respect all religions, as leaders from different faiths coming together to seek blessings for the nation's progress.
