Basant Panchami 2022

Basant Panchami, also known as Saraswati Puja, is a Hindu festival observed to worship Goddess Saraswati. Basant Panchami will be celebrated on Saturday, February 5, this year. Goddess Saraswati is the one who gives us wisdom.

The festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the month of Magh', which marks the beginning of the spring season.

Basant Panchami also announces the arrival of Holi which takes place forty days later. The Vasant Utsava on Panchami is celebrated forty days before spring because every season's transition period is 40 days, after which the season comes into full bloom.

On this day, several platforms host poetic and musical events. Young Bengali children also learn to write their alphabets for the first time. The agricultural fields are full of yellow blossoms from the mustard harvest, making it an ideal day for farmers to rejoice.

The day is also regarded as auspicious for starting anything new, getting married, or doing griha Pravesh (house warming ceremony). Basant Panchami is also the first day of spring in India, when the mustard flowers bloom. The color yellow is associated with the festival, and when in full bloom, entire fields of mustard flowers resemble beds of yellow flowers. People wear yellow-colored clothes and also eat food that has the color yellow in it (like khichdi).
