Mandi Updates: Paddy Wholesale Prices Rise across Benchmark Markets

The wholesale prices of basmati and common paddy rose across the benchmark markets as of April 12, according to the data from the Agmarknet portal run by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. Basmati paddy's month-on-month average wholesale prices in April increased to Rs 4,010.3 per quintal from Rs 3,564, and that of common variety increased to Rs 2,637.94 per quintal from Rs 2,575.58.

Basmati Paddy Prices across India

Among all the regions, Rajasthan saw the largest increase of 11.3% in basmati paddy wholesale prices to Rs 4,403 per quintal, followed by Punjab with a 4.2% increase to Rs 3,935. However, the prices fell in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. In Uttar Pradesh, the prices slumped by 1.6% to Rs 3,463 per quintal, and in Haryana by 1.8% to Rs 4,240.

Basmati rice like other varieties of rice is a kharif crop. It is majorly grown in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Besides India, this special rice is grown in Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Common Paddy Prices across India

Common paddy wholesale prices also rose as of April 12, according to the ministry data. Its month-on-month average wholesale prices increased to Rs 2,637.94 per quintal from Rs 2,575.58. Among all the regions, Uttarakhand saw the largest increase of 12.6% to around Rs 2,476 per quintal, followed by Delhi with an 11.7% increase to Rs 3,346. 

The wholesale prices of common paddy, however, fell in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Kerala, and Telangana. In Telangana, the prices slumped by 3.3% to Rs 2,160 per quintal, and in Tamil Nadu by 2.6% to Rs 2,103.
