Food Safety Connect App emerges as an important tool in fostering consumer empowerment and ensuring the integrity of food products, in an era where food safety is paramount. Spearheaded by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), this initiative aims to establish a transparent platform for consumers to voice concerns, assert their rights, and actively participate in upholding food safety standards across the nation.

Objectives of Food Safety Connect

  • The primary objective of the Food Safety Connect initiative is to cultivate a responsive ecosystem wherein every citizen can contribute to the detection and rectification of food safety violations.

  • Through this app, consumers gain the ability to report unsafe food practices or products swiftly and efficiently.

  • Apart from this, they can also track the progress of their complaints, fostering a sense of accountability and transparency in the resolution process.

Empowering Consumers with Informed Choices & Timely Updates

One of the key features of the Food Safety Connect App is its capability to verify the FSSAI license or registration number of any food business in India. This functionality empowers consumers to make informed choices while purchasing food items, ensuring they patronize establishments that adhere to regulatory standards.

Furthermore, the app serves as a conduit for disseminating important information and notifications issued by FSSAI, thereby keeping consumers abreast of orders, advisories, and instructions relevant to food safety. By enhancing awareness and providing access to resources, the Food Safety Connect App empowers consumers to adopt healthier, safer, and more sustainable eating habits.

Government Initiatives to Enhance Food Safety & Consumer Empowerment

In line with the Food Safety Connect initiative, the government has undertaken various measures to improve food safety and consumer empowerment. Under the Eat Right India campaign, FSSAI has intensified efforts to educate consumers about the significance of healthy dietary choices. Moreover, funds have been allocated for certification programs and consumer awareness campaigns, underscoring the government's commitment to promoting food safety at the grassroots level.

The enactment of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 represents a significant move towards safeguarding consumer rights and interests. Through the establishment of quasi-judicial bodies and regulatory authorities, such as the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), the act aims to streamline grievance redressal mechanisms and curb misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices.

To expedite the resolution of consumer disputes, provisions for online case filing and pre-litigation mechanisms, such as the National Consumer Helpline, have been introduced. These initiatives not only facilitate hassle-free resolution but also foster greater consumer confidence in the efficacy of the legal framework.

Moreover, concerted efforts, such as the Jago Grahak Jago campaign and the introduction of the ‘Jagriti’ mascot, underscore the government's commitment to raising consumer awareness and fostering a culture of informed consumerism. By harnessing technology, fostering transparency, and empowering consumers, these initiatives lay the foundation for a safer and more equitable food ecosystem.
