Kokum is a small fruit like cherry tomato, which primarily grows in the Western Ghats in Goa and Konkan areas. It belongs to mangosteen family and is red in color. Moreover it turns to deep purple at the time of ripening.

The dried kokum is used in many dishes as an alternative to tamarind because it has sour taste and mildly sweet aroma. It is used in Indian cuisines, especially in the regions such as Goa, Gujarat and Maharashtra and other places of the Konkan coast as it contains homely flavours. Not only for culinary purpose, but kokum can be used for various health benefits.
