Are You Susceptible to Infections During Monsoon?
The humidity of the monsoon along with poor hygiene, can weaken your skin barrier making you an easy target for infectious bacteria.
The weather conditions during monsoon are a great breeding period for various microorganisms. These conditions also give rise to various water-borne illnesses. Therefore, the chances of catching the flu or a fever are common during this season. Our skin is the largest organ and can easily catch an infection.
Common Skin Infections During Monsoon:
Fungal Infections: These are the most prevalent skin infections during monsoon. They thrive in warm, humid conditions. Athlete's foot, ringworm, and jock itch are common fungal infections. They cause itching, redness, and scaling of the affected area.
Bacterial Infections: While less common than fungal infections, bacterial skin infections can also occur. Impetigo, folliculitis, and boils are some examples. Pus-filled blisters or sores often characterize these infections.
Viral Infections: Though less frequent, viral infections like warts can also appear during monsoon. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).
What Necessary Precautions Must be Taken?
Hygiene First: Regular bathing with antibacterial soap is essential. Dry yourself thoroughly after bathing, especially between the toes and underarms.
Wear Breathable Fabrics: Choose loose-fitting cotton clothing to allow your skin to breathe. Avoid synthetic fabrics that can trap moisture.
Keep Your Surroundings Clean: Ensure your home and surroundings are clean and dry. Damp areas can harbor bacteria and fungi.
Foot Care is Important: Wear clean socks and change them regularly. Avoid sharing towels and footwear.
Public Place Rules: Be cautious while using public amenities like swimming pools and gyms. These areas can be breeding grounds for infections.
Moisturization is Important: While it might seem counterintuitive, moisturizing is important. It helps maintain the skin's natural barrier. Use oil-free, water-based moisturizers.
Your skin is a vital organ that must be taken care of. Skin infections can be extremely painful and uncomfortable. By following these simple guidelines you can prevent infections and stay healthy during the monsoon.
