It is important to incorporate superfoods that are not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients to keep you healthy and energized during the monsoon months. Ditch the processed snacks and make healthy meal choices, today.

1. Green Veggies:

Monsoon rains bless us with an abundance of fresh, leafy greens like spinach, mustard greens (sarson ka saag), and fenugreek (methi). These are a treasure trove of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They are particularly rich in vitamins A and C, which are essential for boosting immunity and fighting off seasonal infections common during the monsoon.

Recipe Inspiration: Sauté spinach with ginger, garlic, and a squeeze of lemon for a quick and nutritious side dish. Mustard greens simmered with lentils and spices create a hearty and comforting sarson ka saag.

2. Sprouts to the Rescue:

Sprouts are extremely nutritious, easily digested, and stacked with vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. They grow abundantly during the monsoon due to the increased humidity which aids germination. Mung bean sprouts (moong dal) and fenugreek sprouts (methi sprouts) are popular choices in India. They are a great source of plant-based protein, Vitamin B complex, and Vitamin C, all essential for maintaining good health during the monsoon.

Recipe Inspiration: Add a handful of mung bean sprouts to your salads or stir-fries for a satisfying crunch. Roast lightly curried methi sprouts for a healthy and protein-packed snack.

3. Seasonal Fruits:

Monsoon brings a bounty of delicious and refreshing fruits like litchi (lychee), jamun (black plum), and plums. These juicy treats are not only a delightful way to stay hydrated but are also packed with essential vitamins and antioxidants. Litchi is rich in Vitamin C and fibre, while jamun is known for its blood sugar management properties. Plums are a good source of antioxidants and fibre.

Recipe Inspiration: Enjoy these fruits on their own or create a refreshing monsoon fruit salad. You can also whip up a healthy jamun smoothie or popsicles for a cool and nutritious treat.

4. Ginger Goodness:

Ginger is a versatile spice that finds its way into many Indian dishes throughout the year. But its warming properties make it particularly beneficial during the monsoon. Ginger has anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties, which can help combat the common cold, cough, and sore throat that often accompany the monsoon season.

Recipe Inspiration: Add grated ginger to your morning cup of tea or stir-fries for a warming and flavourful kick. You can also try a soothing ginger tea with honey for a sore throat.

5. Haldi Wala Dhoodh:

Turmeric, a golden wonder spice, is a staple in Indian cuisine and boasts a multitude of health benefits. Its curcumin content possesses powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. During the monsoon, when our bodies are more susceptible to infections, turmeric can play a vital role in boosting immunity and promoting overall well-being. And added to milk, it is a pure delicacy.

Recipe Inspiration: Add a pinch of turmeric to your lentil soups and dals for vibrant color and anti-inflammatory benefits. You can also try a warm glass of turmeric milk before bedtime for a soothing and healing effect.

So, the next time you hear the soothing sound of raindrops, head to your local market and stock up on these nourishing superfoods!
