Ahmedabad Bans Unhygienic Food Stalls in Several Districts

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said the state government has no problem with people’s different food habits, amidst the call for removing non-vegetarian food carts from the streets in several cities. But, the CM also warned about the action against food carts that are selling ‘unhygienic’ food or hindering traffic on roads.

Patel is the standing committee chairman of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and is also an MLA from Ahmedabad.

While addressing a BJP program at Bandhani village in the Anand District, Patel said – “Some people eat vegetarian food some people eat non-vegetarian food. The BJP government does not have any problem with it. There have been demands to remove particular ‘larries’ (carts) from the road.”

He also underlined, “The only concern is the food sold from food carts should not be unhygienic.”

“It is the local civic bodies’ decision to remove food carts if they are found to be blocking traffic on roads” – said Patel, and added – “Local municipal corporations or municipalities take decisions to remove food carts. They can do so if they are obstructing traffic on city roads”

This may be noted as the clarification by the Gujarat CM came amidst the calls for the removal of non-vegetarian food carts from roads in different cities of the state, by the local BJP leaders.

The Municipal Corporation in Ahmedabad, ruled by BJP, has taken a decision to remove food stalls selling non-vegetarian food from public roads and also, those operating within 100-meters from religious places and schools.

“Stalls selling non-vegetarian items will not be allowed along public roads and in a 100-meter radius of schools, colleges and religious places, Town Planning Committee of Ahmadabad Municipal Corporation has decided. The execution will start tomorrow” – said Devang Dani, AMC Town Planning Committee chairman.
