Cyclone Alert! After Gulab, 'Shaheen' Might Form Over the Arabian Sea

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm 'Gulab' has weakened into a depression. In a rare weather event, cyclone Gulab, which started in the Bay of Bengal, may re-emerge as cyclone ‘Shaheen' in 2-3 days, according to weather officials.

It is important to mention that Qatar, one of the member nations for naming a tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean, gave the name 'Shaheen.'

“Depression lay focused over Telangana and surrounding areas of Marathwada and Vidarbha to diminish into a well-marked low-pressure area over next six hours: India Meteorological Department,” the IMD said in a tweet. One NDRF team is stationed in Osmanabad, Maharashtra: National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Another cyclone, Shaheen, may form over the Arabian Sea from the remnants of cyclone Gulab, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not ruled out the possibility of formation.

The weather system formed by cyclone Gulab is expected to emerge into the northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat coast around Thursday evening, and it has the potential to intensify further over the northeast Arabian Sea.

Mumbai Rains update

Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in north Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and north Konkan on 29 September 2021. Yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Ahmednagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, Jalgaon, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Beed, Latur, Nanded, Parbhani, Osmanabad and Hingoli.

According to the IMD's weather forecasts, heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls is very likely at isolated locations across Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa; heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations across Gangetic West Bengal, Marathwada, Saurashtra, and Kutch; and heavy rainfall at isolated locations across West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chattisgarh, and Jharkhand, Yanam and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Coastal and North Interior Karnataka, Telanagna, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe and Karaikal.

Meanwhile, rains pounded major parts of Telangana on Monday, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) cautioned that heavy rains are likely in isolated areas across the different districts of the state in the next 48 hours.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao spoke with Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar to assess the situation.

According to an official press release, Rao instructed the Chief Secretary to take the necessary measures against any loss of life or property owing to heavy rains expected across the State over the next two days as a result of the effect of cyclone 'Gulab.'
