Cyclone Alert: Heavy Rainfall Likely In Parts of Mumbai, Odisha & Andhra Pradesh

According to the IMD, parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Thane, are very likely to witness thunderstorm accompanied with lightning/gusty winds and heavy rain at isolated places.

Heavy Rainfall Likely In Parts of Mumbai, Odisha & Andhra Pradesh

Parts of Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar may witness heavy rain on Wednesday as a result of a low pressure region forming over the east central Arabian Sea off the coast of Maharashtra and a western disturbance. 

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), fairly widespread rain/thunderstorm with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected over Gujarat, north central Maharashtra, and the north Konkan area on Wednesday and Thursday. 

According to the IMD, regions of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Thane, are extremely likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning/gusty winds and heavy rain in isolated locations. 

West Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Haryana, and west Uttar Pradesh may also experience Isolated to scattered rainfall with thunderstorms/lightning is expected on December 1-2, with maximum activity on Thursday. 

Cyclone warning 

The IMD has also issued an alert of a probable cyclone striking Odisha's coastal districts on Saturday, with the Regional Meteorological Centre urging fishermen out in the sea to return by December 2 morning. 

This is due to a low pressure region that is expected to emerge over the south Andaman Sea and proceed west-northwestwards before condensing into a depression over the south east and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal. 

The Odisha government has directed district collectors to remain ready for any eventuality. 

Fishermen in West Bengal have been warned not to go out into the sea from December 3 to 5Odisha special relief commissioner PK Jena has instructed district collectors to keep a careful eye on the situation in light of the IMD's forecast of severe to very heavy rainfall owing to a probable cyclone. 

"Fishermen are advised not to venture into the southeast and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal on December 2 and 3, west central and adjoining northwest BoB on December 3 and 5, and along and off the north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha-West Bengal coast from December 3 to December 5," said HR Biswas, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar. 

Under its influence, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Wednesday.
