Farmers Protest in Front of Tanda & Dasuya Residence of Ministers; Demand New Sugar Mills

Farmers arriving on trailers loaded with sugarcane began staging a dharna in front of Tanda MLA Jasveer Singh Raja's house, led by Doaba Kisan Committee- Punjab chief Jangveer Singh Chouhan. A similar dharna has begun in front of Dasuya MLA Karambir Singh Ghuman's home.

Protesters chanted slogans against the Punjab government, accusing it of breaking promises. However, neither MLA was present in their home as they are in Gujarat to campaign for elections.

Earlier in the day, as the farmers in Tanda moved towards MLA Raja's house, the police attempted to stop them by barricading their path. This sparked an argument between the farmers and the police, after which the farmers were permitted to proceed to the MLA’s house.

During the Tanda dharna, farmer leaders Chauhan, Prithpal Singh Goraya, and Amarjit Singh Kurala claimed that following a meeting of farmer organizations at Punjab Bhawan in Chandigarh, CM Bhagwant Mann promised to start the mills between November 5 and November 15. Despite the promise, the government has yet to issue a notification. The Aam Aadmi Party's MLAs and ministers are campaigning in Gujarat for votes in the name of development, but Punjab farmers are struggling to sell their produce.                                       

Farmer leaders stated that the sit-in in front of both MLAs' homes would continue until sugarcane mills were built in the area. They warned that if the farmers' demands were not met, the roads would be closed.

Doaba Kisan Committee's Dasuya unit, led by state vice-president Jangveer Singh Chouhan, staged a sit-in in front of Dasuya MLA's residence. During this, state vice-president Jangveer Singh warned that the agitation had begun today with a sit-in in front of the homes of two MLAs and that if the farmers' demands were not met, the struggle would be intensified across the state.
