The Tamil Nadu Construction Workers' Welfare Board is seeking applications from construction workers interested in building or owning houses, for which the state government has promised to give a subsidy of ₹4 lakh.

Tamil Chief Minister M.K. Stalin stated in the State Assembly that construction workers will be given 4 lakh as a subsidy to build their own house.

Pon Kumar, the board's chairman, stated that the scheme's initial phase will be accessible to 10,000 workers. Only registered members of the board were eligible for the scheme.

The scheme allowed construction workers to choose between financial aid for allotment of tenements built by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board or beneficiary-led development (BLC).

Any construction worker who owns a plot and wishes to build a house will be awarded a subsidy of ₹4 lakh at various stages of construction.

The minimum size of the house to be constructed is 300 square feet, and the funds will be provided by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA).

For those construction workers opting for tenements, financial assistance would be given based on the norms of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural).

About Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana:

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a Government of India initiative to offer affordable housing to the urban poor, with a goal of constructing 2 crore (20 million) affordable houses by March 31, 2022.

This scheme is linked to other programs to guarantee that all homes have a toilet, a Saubhagya Yojana power connection, Ujjwala Yojana LPG connection, access to drinking water, and Jan Dhan banking services, etc. As of December 28, 2019, a total of 1 crore dwellings have been authorized against a total demand of 1.12 crore.
