The prices of domestic LPG cylinders had been raised four times in the year 2022.

As is customary, petroleum companies in India revised their prices for LPG cylinders on April 1, the first day of the new financial year. According to recent media reports, the prices of commercial gas cylinders have been reduced by nearly Rs 92, while the prices for domestic LPG cylinders remain unchanged.

The prices of domestic LPG cylinders had been raised four times in the year 2022, with the most recent increase taking place in January this year, when the price of commercial cylinders was also raised by Rs 25, costing Rs 1,768 in Delhi.

In terms of pricing, commercial gas cylinders tend to fluctuate more compared to domestic LPG cylinders. For instance, in Delhi, a 19kg commercial gas cylinder was retailing at Rs 2,253 last year, which is significantly higher than the current price. This indicates a price drop of Rs 225 for commercial gas cylinders in the national capital alone.

As per the announcement made by Union Minister Anurag Thakur in March, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme will receive a subsidy of Rs 200 on every 14.2 kg LPG gas cylinder annually. Under this scheme, all households are eligible for 12 subsidised domestic LPG cylinders, and any additional ones are to be purchased at market price.

The ongoing US economic sentiment and banking crisis have contributed to the fall in oil prices, which have now dropped for the fifth consecutive month. This has resulted in its second quarterly decline since early 2020.
