Government Releases Second Advance Estimates of Production of Major Crops

The government has estimated record production of Rice, Wheat, Maize, Gram, Moong, Rapeseed & Mustard and Sugarcane during 2022-23.

The assessment of production of different crops is based on the feedback received from States and validated with information available from other sources.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the Second Advance Estimates of production of major crops for agricultural year 2022-23 on Tuesday. Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said that foodgrain production of 3235.54 Lakh Tonnes is projected in the current agricultural year.

Agriculture sector is developing day by day because of the hard work of farmers, expertise of scientists and farmer friendly policies of the Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the minister said.

Appreciating the boost in the production of coarse grains in advance estimates, he hoped that there will be further increase in the production and use of coarse grains in the coming years.

It must be noted that the year 2023 has been declared as the International Year of Millets by the United Nations. Recently, PM Modi has given the name of 'Sri Anna' to coarse grains or nutritious grains.

Second Advance Estimates of major crops for 2022-23

Foodgrains  –  3235.54 Lakh Tonnes

Wheat – 1121.82 Lakh Tonnes

Rice  –  1308.37 Lakh Tonnes

Nutri / Coarse Cereals – 527.26 Lakh Tonnes

Maize  –  346.13 Lakh Tonnes

Barley – 22.04 Lakh Tonnes

Total Pulses – 278.10 Lakh Tonnes

Moong – 35.45 Lakh Tonnes

Gram – 136.32 Lakh Tonnes

Oilseeds  –  400.01 Lakh Tonnes

Groundnut  –  100.56 Lakh Tonnes

Soyabean  –  139.75 Lakh Tonnes

Rapeseed & Mustard – 128.18 Lakh Tonnes

Sugarcane – 4687.89 Lakh Tonnes

Cotton –  337.23 Lakh bales (of 170 kg each)

Jute & Mesta –100.49 Lakh bales (of 180 kg each)

According to the Second Advance Estimates for 2022-23, total foodgrain output in the country is estimated at record 3235.54 lakh tonnes i.e., higher by 79.38 LMT as compared to previous year 2021-22.          

Rice production during 2022-23 is estimated at (record) 1308.37 lakh tonnes - higher by 13.65 lakh tonnes as compared to previous year.

Wheat output (record) is projected at 1121.82 LMT which is again higher by 44.40 LMT in comparison to previous year’s production.

Maize production during 2022-23 is estimated at (record) 346.13 lakh tonnes, higher by 8.83 lakh tonnes than last year production of 337.30 lakh tonnes.

Moong production at a new record of 35.45 LMT and nutri / coarse cereals at 527.26 lakh tonnes.

Production of pulses is estimated at 278.10 lakh tonnes i.e. higher by 5.08 lakh tonnes as compared to last year’s production of 273.02 LMT.

Soybean and rapeseed & mustard production is estimated at 139.75 LMT & 128.18 LMT respectively, which is again higher by 9.89 LMT and 8.55 LMT than the previous year.

Oilseeds production is estimated at record 400.01 lakh tonnes.

Cotton production is estimated at 337.23 lakh bales (of 170 kg each), production of Jute and Mesta at 100.49 lakh bales (of 180 kg each) and Sugarcane is estimated at record 4687.89 lakh tonnes.
