Heavy Rainfall Causes Water-logging, Traffic Jam in Delhi, Orange Alert Issued

Continuous rainfall in Delhi has caused traffic jams and water-logging in several parts of the city. In addition, the India's meteorological department (IMD) has issued orange alert for Delhi.

IMD in its previous bulletin had said that Delhi-NCR will receive in the weekend. In addition, it said that rainfall will reduce the maximum temperature to 32 degrees Celsius for the next three to four days.  However, on Wednesday, the highest temperature recorded in Delhi was 38 degrees Celsius and the lowest temperature recorded was 27.4 degrees Celsius. 

This month, Delhi received just 63.2mm of rain, while the normal rainfall so far is 157.1mm. On August 10, adjoining areas in northwestern India entered the second interrupted monsoon phase of the season.  

Previously, IMD predicted that Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Punjab will experience moderate rain from August 19 to 23. Weather experts said good rainfall in the last 10 days of the month can make up for the lack of rainfall in the capital. 

Normally, the rainfall in the capital in August is 247.7mm. During the monsoon season, Delhi has increased rainfall in certain areas along the foothills of northeastern India, the Himalayas and certain parts of southern peninsula. 

In July, rainfall in the capital region was 507.1 mm, which was almost 141% higher than normal level rainfall.  Also, this is the highest rainfall of the month since July 2003. 

IMD uses four color codes for weather alerts 

The IMD department uses colors like Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red for weather alert.  

Green means everything is normal, and yellow means the weather is bad. Orange indicates an extreme weather warning, which may cause travel interruption due to road and drain closures and power supply interruption, while red code indicates that severe weather conditions will interrupt travel and energy and pose a major risk to life.
