ICAR in Collaboration With KVK Organized Farmer Training Program on Banana Cultivation

Over the last few months, the ICAR National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB) in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) has organized exhibition-cum-training sessions and has given training to over 350 banana growers from six districts in the state in banana cultivation practices and value addition.

The Motive Behind The Initiative

The training program was organized to assist farmers in acquiring knowledge about banana cultivation and the importance of value-added products. Groups of 50-100 farmers from Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Madurai, Namakkal, and Tiruarur participated in the programs which were held in the respective state Kendras.

Planting materials of different varieties and a micro-nutrient concoction produced by NRCB, "Banana Sakthi," were provided to attendees free of cost. A banana handbook was also distributed, with information on the various components of its cultivation, such as different varieties and post-harvest techniques.

Uma, Director of the NRCB, stated in a press statement that the outreach proposal was envisioned with the aim of expanding farmer knowledge and understanding of banana cultivation and the entrepreneurial opportunities available. Furthermore, the initiative highlighted the significance of value-added products and an effective value chain.

Karpagam, NRCB's Principal Scientist (Agricultural Extension) and Training Coordinator stated that farmers can use the NRCB's services and improve banana cultivation. 

The district-level micro exhibitions and Kela Melas targeted specific groups and provided farmers with the necessary information. Farmers were also informed about the programs established by the state and federal governments to benefit them.
