IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall in These States in the Next 48 Hours; Red Alert Issued

Under the impact of a cyclonic circulation, heavy rain is forecasted in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. According to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional office in Chennai, a new low pressure area is predicted to emerge by Monday.

It has issued a red alert for all coastal districts till Saturday, and an orange alert for neighboring districts. 

According to the IMD, a new round of heavy rainfall will hit Thoothukudi, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Theni, Madurai, and Pudukottai in Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry, between November 25 and November 29. 

In light of this, the Union Territory of Puducherry has declared a two-day holiday in all schools and colleges. 

IMD further said, a cyclonic circulation exists across the Comorin Area and adjoining Sri Lanka coasts, with strong northeasterly winds dominating at lower levels along the Tamil Nadu coast and south Coastal Andhra Pradesh. 

It also predicted that a new low pressure region will build over the south Andaman Sea around November 29. "It is anticipated to grow more noticeable and move west-northwestwards in the next 48 hours," IMD stated. 

"On the 26th and 27th of November, a squally wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph with gusts up to 60 kmph) is extremely probable across the Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar, along and off the south Tamilnadu coast, and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal. Fishermen are advised not to venture these regions "it further said. 

Andhra Pradesh's coastal parts, as well as Yanam and Rayalaseeman, are expected to get scattered heavy rains on Saturday, according to the weather department. On Sunday and Monday, the severity of the rain is expected to rise. 

"Fishermen are urged not to enter into these regions," the IMD tweeted. 

From October 1 to November 25, Tamil Nadu got 61% more rain than usual during the northeast monsoon season. Since the first week of November severe rains has wreaked havoc across the state, particularly in Chennai. 

A six-member central team returned from a four-day visit to Tamil Nadu earlier this week to inspect rain-related damage, as the state has requested 4,000 crore in central aid for restoration work.
