In an official announcement, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for the Tamil Nadu coast, Karaikal, and Puducherry. The weather department cited the cause of the heavy rainfall to the depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean.

On March 3, the coastal parts of Tamil Nadu may expect light to moderate rainfall.

According to IMD, the depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal would strengthen into a deep depression during the next 24 hours.

On 5th and 6th of March, the coastal area will almost certainly experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. On these days, the IMD also issued a warning to fishermen, advising them to avoid venturing out into the Southwest and adjoining West central Bay of Bengal, adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean, Gulf of Thailand, and Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area and along and off Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts till 6 March.

According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall/thunderstorms are predicted over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on March 3. They also stated that light to moderate rainfall/thundershower is likely in many places, with isolated heavy rainfall over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal; and light to moderate rainfall/thundershower is likely in a few places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on March 4th.

During the next 24 hours, there is a possibility of fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall/snowfall with isolated thunderstorms/lightning across Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, according to the IMD.

According to the official statement, a rainy spell across the Western Himalayan Region and adjoining plains is very likely today. Another wet spell is possible between March 6 and 8, with isolated heavy rains across Jammu & Kashmir on March 6.

Isolated light rain is expected to fall across Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh over the next 24 hours.

According to the official statement, strong surface winds (speed 25-35 kmph) are expected to dominate across Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi and Rajasthan on March 4th and over most parts of plains of northwest India on March 5th.

The IMD has issued a warning about the potential effects of the Deep Depression, which is expected to hit the Tamil Nadu coast-Karaikal-Puducherry.

In the Warning it mentioned that localized Flooding of roads, inundation and water logging in low lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the above region might take place.

It further mentioned that occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall is possible. Disruption of traffic in major cities due to water logging in roads leading to increased travel time is also a possible effect.
