Kisan Andolan Update: Farmers from 22 States will Protest Outside Parliament: Samyukta Kisan Morcha

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Thursday said that farmers from 22 states will take part in protests outside parliament starting July 22 to demand the repeal of disputed farm laws and a legal guarantee on MSP. 

During the monsoon session, an umbrella group of over 40 farmer unions has planned daily protests outside parliament with around 200 farmers. The leaders stated that the demonstrations will be "peaceful."  

"The appeal for a Parliament March from July 22 to August 13 has got an amazing and enthusiastic response from across the country," the Samyukta Kisan Morcha stated in a statement. 

Apart from Punjab and Haryana, the protest will draw farmers from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan. 

Women marches on July 26 and August 9 will draw large crowds from across India, including the northeastern regions, according to the statement. 

"Farmers from all over India would march in a disciplined manner to parliament to put their demands and have their voices heard," SKM stated. 

Punjabi artists, including Gul Panag, Amitoj Mann, and Babbu Mann, performed for the demonstrators camped at the Singhu border on Thursday, expressing their support for the farmers' cause, according to the statement. 

They also called on Indian citizens to show their support for the farmers' cause. 

"It is notable that all parts of the country are rallying behind the farmers, and it is regrettable that the Union government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has yet to do justice to the farmers and side with them," the statement stated. 

Thousands of farmers from throughout the country have been protesting at the Delhi border, claiming that three farm laws will eliminate the Minimum Support Price system, leaving them at the mercy of big businesses. 

Over ten sessions of negotiations with the government has happened in the past, however, the two parties are yet to resolve the dispute.
