Manganti Seshu Madhav Appointed as Director of ICAR- Central Tobacco Research Institute

Senior scientist Manganti Seshu Madhav with the Institute of Rice Research of ICAR has been appointed as the director of ICAR-Central Tobacco Research Institute (CTRI). He took charge of the CTRI on Friday,11th November at Rajahmundry.

Seshu Madhav has decades of experience in research. He has made contributions in the fields of Plant Biotechnology and Genetic Enhancement in rice crops, molecular biology, and breeding in tobacco and rice, all of which have greatly benefited the nation's farming community. 

Blast resistance gene introgression into elite rice cultivars for the development of blast resistance, a significant disease in rice also the issues on which he has worked, according to a press release.

Recipient of the best scientist award in 2020 by the former vice president of India M. Venkaiah Naidu has also worked on genomic resources in tobacco, four rice varieties, identified and cloned two rice blast resistant genes, created molecular markers for many important rice traits, and discovered novel genetic resources for difficult biotic stresses.

He is a post-doctoral fellow at Ohio State University in the United States and a member of several scientific academies in the country, including the Telangana Academy of Sciences. He has published over 125 research articles, has mentored several M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, and serves as a reviewer for numerous international and national journals. 

Other than this he has bagged prestigious awards like the Lal Bahadur Shastri Young Scientist Award, CSIR best S&T innovation for rural development Award, Jawaharlal Nehru Award for outstanding postgraduate agricultural research 2006” from ICAR, Govt. of India and so many others to date.
