Padma Shri Awardee Agriculture Scientist B V Nimbkar Passes Away

Agriculture scientist and Padma Shri awardee, B.V. Nimbkar, died at 90 years age due to his age-related ailments on 25^th August, 2021 at Phaltan in Maharashtra’s Satara district, sources close to his family told the media.

Nimbkar was born in 1931 and was the founder of Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) and was working on research and development of animal husbandry and agriculture.

In 2006, he was awarded the Padma Shri Award for his contribution in the field of agriculture. He was also the holder of prestigious Jamnalal Bajaj award.

Achievements of B.V. Nimbkar

Bonbehari Vishnu Nimbkar was an Indian agricultural scientist and social worker, known for his pioneering work in the fields of animal husbandry and agriculture. He is the founder of Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute which is a Phaltan-based non-governmental organization engaged in research and development in agriculture and animal husbandry. The Government of India awarded him the fourth civilian honor of Padma Shri, in 2006 for his contribution in Indian agricultural sector. He was also given the Jamnalal Bajaj Award for application of science and technology for rural applications in November 2016.

The Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) and a non-profit research and development institute. The NARI is registered under the Societies Registration Act XII 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950. It is located in the rural town of Phaltan (a taluka, 300 km southeast of Mumbai) in the state of Maharashtra. NARI was founded in 1968 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018.

The basic philosophy of the Institute is to solve the age-old problems of rural India through the application of science and technology excellence. As a result, very innovative research and development work has been carried out with a limited budget in the areas of agriculture, renewable energy, animal husbandry and sustainable development.

NARI has completed more than 90 projects over the past 50 years with a total funding of Rs 180 million (worth Rs.450 million in 2018). Every rupee spent by NARI on funded projects generates an income of around Rs.150 crore. And the legacy continues..
