International Women's Day 2023: ‘DigitALL’ Celebrating Women's Achievements, Advocating Gender Equality Through Innovation & Technology

International Women’s Day is a global day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and raises awareness about gender equality. The day is observed on March 8 every year, and it is an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made towards achieving gender equality, recognize the challenges that women still face, and take action towards creating a more equitable world.

The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in 1975, and in 1977, the UN General Assembly declared March 8 as International Women’s Day in support of women’s rights and global peace. Since then, the United Nations has commemorated the day by establishing a theme each year.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”. This theme is aligned with the priority theme for the upcoming 67th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW-67), which is “Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls". The theme recognizes the transformative potential of innovation and technology in advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls.

The goal of International Women’s Day is to celebrate women’s accomplishments and advocate for gender equality. The day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges and barriers that women face in achieving gender equality and to take action towards creating a world where women are treated equally, with respect and dignity, and have access to the same opportunities and resources as men.

International Women’s Day also serves as a reminder of the importance of gender equality and the need to continue working towards creating a world where everyone is treated equally, regardless of gender. It encourages individuals and organizations to take action towards achieving gender equality and to promote women’s rights and empowerment.

The history of International Women’s Day dates back to 1909 when the Socialist Party of America established National Women’s Day in New York. The day was proposed by labor activist Theresa Malkiel to commemorate citywide protests against garment workers. Later that year, German delegates proposed the idea of a women’s day, drawing inspiration from American socialists, though no specific date was set.

Since then, the day has grown into a global event, with millions of people across the world participating in events and activities to celebrate women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality.

International Women’s Day is an important global event that celebrates women’s achievements, raises awareness about gender equality, and advocates for women’s rights and empowerment.
