Weather Alert: Two Western Disturbances to Bring Heavy Rainfall in Many States; Details Inside

Over the coming week, two consecutive western disturbances are expected to cause significant rainfall over northwest and adjoining parts of central India, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The first disturbance is likely to last from January 3 to 6, while the second is expected to last from January 7 to January 9, according to the department.

The first disturbance and its associated induced cyclonic circulation is expected to affect northwest India from January 3 to 7, causing widespread rainfall or snowfall with the possibility of isolated heavy snowfall/rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir on January 4-5 and over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on January 5.

Isolated hailstorms are also likely over J&K on January 4 - 5, as well as in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on January 5. During January 5-7, scattered to fairly widespread light/moderate rainfall is likely across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, north Rajasthan, and West Uttar Pradesh, with light isolated rainfall also expected over west Madhya Pradesh. On January 5, isolated thunderstorms are expected over Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, along with hailstorms over Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

Rainfall/snowfall activity is expected to intensify across the western Himalayan region, with the possibility of isolated heavy rain on January 8 and scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall/thunderstorm over the plains of northwest and neighboring central India during January 7-9. On January 8, an isolated heavy rain and hailstorm is expected across Rajasthan and adjoining areas of West Madhya Pradesh, and on January 9, over Punjab, Haryana, UP, and MP.

"We expect widespread rains in northwest India and portions of central India till January 9, with heavy rain possible on January 5 and 6 and January 8 and 9." Day temperatures may be lower than usual due to two severe western disturbances that hit back-to-back, and the sky may be overcast. Temperatures at night are expected to be above average. On January 5 and 7, there is also a chance of extensive rainfall in Delhi.

Rainfall and hailstorm are expected across Telangana, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand as a result of the second disturbance, according to RK Jenamani, senior scientist at IMD's national weather forecasting center.

No substantial change in minimum temperatures is expected throughout northwest India over the next 24 hours, with a steady rise of 3-5°C expected over the next 3-4 days, according to an IMD statement issued on Sunday.

Minimum temperatures are expected to be above average to significantly above normal from 4^th January.

Cold wave conditions are projected to persist in isolated pockets over Punjab and Haryana for the next 24 hours before dissipating.
