Chhameshwar Mandal, progressive Makhana farmer

Chhameshwar Mandal, a 67-year-old progressive farmer from Sheetalnagar, Surang Tola village in Kishanganj District, Bihar, has become a symbol of success in agriculture through his innovative approach to makhana production and fish farming. Engaged in these ventures since 1990, Mandal has transformed his life and the lives of many others in his community.

Born into a family with limited financial means, Chhameshwar completed his secondary education in 1972 but could not pursue higher studies due to economic constraints. Surrounded by large water reservoirs, he recognized an opportunity in makhana production, prompting him to start cultivating this aquatic crop in just 2 acres in 1990. Despite initial challenges such as managing water resources, fluctuating market prices, and crop losses from heavy rainfall, Mandal was determined to succeed.

Understanding the importance of knowledge in agriculture, Mandal sought assistance from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Kishanganj. There, he received scientific training on makhana production and fish farming, as well as insights into jute and vegetable cultivation. This training provided him with the skills and confidence to improve his farming practices and navigate the complexities of agricultural production.

Empowering the Community

Chhameshwar Mandal’s commitment to progress extended beyond his own farm. He began sharing the scientific methods of makhana production with fellow farmers in his village, significantly increasing their income and creating employment opportunities for tribal farmers and youth. Recognizing the power of collective effort, Mandal established a farmer producer organization that further enhanced the financial stability of the community.

Social Impact and Achievements

Mandal’s passion for social service led him to collaborate with government officials to renovate local water reservoirs, thereby improving irrigation for all farmers in the area. Currently managing approximately 85 to 90 acres for makhana and fish farming, he not only focuses on his business but also engages the youth in agricultural activities, fostering a sense of responsibility and community.

The financial outcomes of Mandal's efforts are impressive. In the 2022-23 fiscal year, he earned around Rs 15 to 16 lakh, with expectations to increase his income to Rs 16 to 20 lakh in 2023-24. This growth has significantly improved his family’s standard of living and enabled him to contribute to social initiatives, such as facilitating the admission of underprivileged children into Navodaya Vidyalayas and providing job opportunities.

Chhameshwar Mandal's journey exemplifies how access to the right information and technical support can lead to remarkable opportunities in agriculture. His unwavering dedication and pursuit of excellence demonstrate that with hard work and the right guidance, any farmer can achieve their goals. Mandal’s success is not just a personal triumph but also a beacon of hope for the community, illustrating that economic and social progress is attainable through commitment, innovation, and collective effort.
