Union Minister for Jal Shakti Releases Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment Report 2023
In-depth analysis of the data reveals encouraging trends, with improvements observed in 226 assessment units across the country compared to the 2022 assessment.
The Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, unveiled the Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment Report for the entire country for the year 2023 today. This collaborative effort between the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and various States/Union Territories aims to provide a comprehensive overview for informed decision-making among stakeholders.
According to the 2023 assessment report, the nation witnessed a significant positive shift in ground water dynamics. The total annual ground water recharge reached 449.08 billion cubic meters (BCM), showcasing a notable increase of 11.48 BCM compared to the previous year (2022). Simultaneously, annual ground water extraction for the entire country stands at 241.34 BCM, maintaining a delicate balance in the nation's water resources.
The report highlights a decrease in the number of 'Over-exploited' units, indicating positive strides in sustainable water management practices. Among the 6553 assessment units nationwide, 4793 units have been categorized as 'Safe,' emphasizing the importance of implementing effective water conservation measures. The stage of ground water extraction currently stands at 59.23%, reflecting a cautious approach to resource utilization.
The report attributes the increased ground water recharge to various factors, including enhanced seepage from canals, the return flow of irrigation water, and recharges from water bodies, tanks, and water conservation structures. This underscores the significance of holistic water conservation strategies in maintaining a healthy water balance.
Joint initiatives between the CGWB and States/UTs for such comprehensive assessments have been conducted periodically, with the latest being in 2023. Previous assessments were carried out in 1980, 1995, 2004, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017, 2020, and 2022, emphasizing the government's commitment to regularly monitor and manage the nation's water resources.
The release event was attended by key dignitaries, including Ms. Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary of the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation; Ms. Vini Mahajan, Secretary of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation; Subodh Yadav, Joint Secretary (A, IC & GW); and Dr. Sunil Kumar Ambast, Chairman of CGWB.
