Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall in Many States till 31 Aug; Fishermen Warned

The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for six districts in Kerala on 28 and 29 August. Further, a yellow alert has been sounded for all the other districts in the state.

Waterlogging due to Heavy Rainfall

Weather in India has been quite unpredictable in the past few days. Many states received unexpected rainfall while others are still waiting for normal showers. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for six districts in Kerala for August 28 and 29. A yellow alert has also been issued for all other districts in the state. 

On August 28, the weather department issued an orange alert for Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, predicting extremely heavy rainfall of around 20 cm. 

For Sunday, the IMD issued an orange alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad districts. 

"The southwest monsoon has been vigorous over Kerala," according to the IMD website, with rain falling in most parts of Kerala and Lakshadweep. 

The weatherman recorded 13 cm of rain at Kozha in the Kottayam district, 12 cm at Cherthala in the Alappuzha district, and 11 cm at Aluva and Keerampara ARG in the Ernakulam district. 

The IMD has also warned fishermen not to go out into the sea until August 30. 

"Strong winds of 40-50 km/h with gusts up to 60 km/h are expected over the Arabian Sea's southwest and west central regions.

Fishermen are advised not to enter these sea areas during the above mentioned period "Met stated. 

The IMD also predicted widespread to heavy rain in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. 

According to the latest forecasts, extensive rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to persist across northeast India, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim till the 27th of August, then decrease with isolated heavy rainfall over the following region.
