Weather Update: IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert for These States

Kerala is likely to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next 3 days, according to the India Meteorological Department. On Monday, an orange alert was issued for Pathanamthitta and Idukki, while the rest of the state, with the exception of Alappuzha and Ernakulam, was issued a yellow alert.

Similar warnings for very heavy rain were issued for Idukki and Malappuram on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Kozhikode is on orange alert.

A cyclonic circulation exists across the southeast Arabian Sea off the coast of Kerala, extending up to 3.1km above mean sea level. During the next 48 hours, a low-pressure area is expected to form over east central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea.

Thunderstorms with lightning are expected to occur in one or two locations in Kerala and Lakshadweep till October 7. Squally weather (wind speeds of 40-50kmph) is expected across the Southeast and East Central Arabian Sea long and off the Kerala-Karnataka-Goa coasts.

Wind speeds in the region will range between 45-55 kilometres per hour on Tuesday. Fishermen have been advised to stay off these waters during this time period.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has been active over Kerala. The 24-hour rainfall recorded on Sunday ranged from heavy to very heavy in several parts of the state.

Kozhikode received the most rain (12cm), while Vellarikkundu (Kasaragod) received 10cm, and Konni, Taliparamba, Padinjarathara Dam (Wayanad), Muvattupuzha, Mattannur, and Cheruthazham (all in Kannur) received 9cm rainfall apiece. Karipur airport, Pattambi, and Konni each received 8cm of rain, while Vellanikkara and Chalakudy, Mannarkkad, Hosdurg, and Kakkayam (Kozhikode) each received 7cm.

Vellanikkara had the greatest maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius, while Punalur had the lowest minimum temperature of 22 degrees Celsius.

According to the weather department, conditions are still favourable for the beginning of the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from some parts of northwest India on October 6.

Weather in Delhi

Delhi will experience partly cloudy skies on Monday (4 October 2021) as the Weather Department forecasts no rain for the national capital.

The Met department has also issued an orange alert for many parts of West Bengal for 4th October.
