Animal husbandry or animal science is an agricultural practice of breeding and raising the livestock. Animal Husbandry plays an important role in rural areas because a large number of farmers depend upon it for their livelihood. The scope of animal husbandry is quite good globally. There are many jobs in this field for example - supplying of milk, meat, egg, and wool etc.

After completing a degree or diploma in animal husbandry, the professionals can either run their own farms or can work in more specialized areas. You can also work as a consultant to a commercial or management officer and can also work as a relations manager on a farm. There are full time as well as correspondence courses in animal husbandry in India. At present we have many universities and colleges offering this course.

How to get admission?

Students can get admission in Under Graduate courses after completing their class 12th with Physics Chemistry and Biology subjects.

And after you complete the UG course, you can apply for admission in the postgraduate or diploma course.

Later, once you complete your post graduation in the field, you will be eligible for Ph.D. courses.

Colleges providing Animal Husbandry courses in India

1. Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) is one of the leading veterinary universities in India. GADVASU was established on 9 August 2005 to serve the society by endorsing livestock production, health and prevention of diseases through integrated teaching and extension programs. It provides Under Graduate as well as Post Graduate courses in the field.

2. National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal

National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) initially started as Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in 1923 in Bangalore. Later it was expanded and called as Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936 and in 1947 it was renamed as National Dairy Research Institute. Consequently, in 1955, NDRI headquarters was shifted to Karnal in Haryana. At present, NDRI provides B.Tech in Dairy Technology (DT), Diploma in Dairy Technology, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. It also offers Master’s program in dairying and doctoral programs in the various disciplines of dairying.

3. College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Gujarat

The College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry is a well known educational and research institute in India which was established on 16th August 1964 by the Government of Gujarat. Later, it became a part of the Gujarat Agricultural University in 1974. The College offers graduate courses in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. And has an intake of 82 students every year.

4. Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai

Bombay Veterinary College (BVC) was established in 1886 and inaugurated by the father of modern Veterinary Journalism, Prof. J. H. Steel. The institution is affiliated with Maharashtra Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (MAFSU), Nagpur. BVC offers both - UG and PG courses.

5. Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Andhra Pradesh

Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University was established in 2005 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The college mainly focuses on veterinary studies. It offers Diploma, Under Graduate, Post Graduate as well as Doctorate courses in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. 

6. Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Haryana

The Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LRUVAS) was established by Government of Haryana in 2010. The university offers Under Graduate as well as Post Graduate courses in the field of Veterinary and Animal science.

7. College of Veterinary and Animal Science, Bikaner

The College of Veterinary and Animal Science in Bikaner started operation on 16 August 1954. The college has well-equipped laboratories, sufficient classrooms, hostel facilities, stores, housing for poultry, auditorium, NCC wing, library, computer lab, and good canteen.

8. College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Ranchi

College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry in Ranchi was established on 30th November 1961. Earlier the college only had Under Graduate courses but in 1972 Post Graduate courses were also started in six disciplines. These courses were further strengthened in all major disciplines.

9. College Of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, Jabalpur

College Of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry in Jabalpur was established to impart knowledge in different branches of veterinary and fisheries and allied sciences. Admissions are made via state level entrance examination (Animal Husbandry Diploma) conducted by Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board, Bhopal.

10. Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Uttar Pradesh

Indian Veterinary Research Institute, established in 1889 is country’s premier advanced research institution in the field of veterinary science and related branches. It has regional campuses at Bangalore, Mukteshwar, Palampur, Kolkata, Bhopal and Srinagar. The Institute is currently under the administrative control of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Delhi.
