World Elephant Day: Significance
World Elephant Day holds great importance by raising consciousness about the challenges confronting elephants. It strives to enhance safeguards for elephants in their natural habitats, enhance regulations to counter the illicit ivory trade and poaching, conserve their living environments, enhance the welfare of captive elephants, and reintegrate captive elephants into protected areas.
This occasion serves as a prompt highlighting elephants' significance within our ecosystem and the imperative to guarantee their perpetuation for upcoming generations. It provides a global opportunity for individuals to unite, displaying solidarity for these splendid creatures and collectively reaffirming the dedication to ensure their prosperity.
How to Preserve Elephants?
At present, the largest terrestrial mammal on Earth faces a critical situation. The IUCN Red List designates all three categories—Asian, African forest, and African savannah—as endangered. WCS has established strategies and initiatives to assist these creatures in regaining their historical habitats.
Challenges
The substantial impact on elephants is driven by unlawful hunting and the depletion of their natural habitats. From 2002 to 2013, the population of Central African forest elephants declined by 65%, accompanied by a 30% reduction in their territory. Savannah elephants in certain regions have also experienced significant declines. Recent surveys indicate a 60% decrease in Tanzania and a 40% decrease in Mozambique over the past five years.
