A three days' workshop on “Importance of Life Skills for Personality Development of Students” was organized at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University by Department of Veterinary Physiology & Biochemistry, College of Veterinary Science for students of Bachelor of Vet.Sc. & Animal Husbandry 1st year. Dr. Shashi Nayyar HOD informed that the workshop aimed at helping the students to deal with the challenges of personal and professional life more efficiently and effectively. Dr. Kiran Walia, Psychologist, Head, Dept. of Education, GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar narrated the meaning and significance of Life skills to students.  They were acquainted with the different types of Life skills i.e. communication skills, stress management, time management, money management, empathy, decision making, problem solving, interpersonal relationship and self-awareness using power point presentation and real-life examples. The workshop was quite beneficial to students as they are somewhere lacking in one or the other skill. There is often a mismatch between what students acquire in the classroom and the demands placed on them outside the classroom.

The graduates need to be equipped with employability skills, such as teamwork skills, communication skills and the ability to cope under pressure.  The purpose of education is to prepare students for the world of work; we need to equip our students with the kind of expertise that will enable them to meet those challenges.  The three-day workshop covered thinking Skills, social skills and emotional skills. Thinking skills covered creative thinking, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. Social skills include the art of communication, inter-personal relationship and empathy. Emotional skills meant coping with emotions and stress. The students learnt the importance of critical thinking in stress management, time management, decision making, problem solving, interpersonal relationship, self-awareness and empathy in the development of their personality. The workshop concluded with healthy discussions and counseling session of the students. The students gave their feedback in which they appreciated the activities which helped them to introspect their strengths and weaknesses, emotions and realize the positive perspective for grooming the professional life.
