Conservation and sustainable utilization of crop diversity is key to meeting the challenges posed by climate change and malnutrition. While millions of crop accessions conserved in about 1750 gene-banks across the world, their utilisation is a major concern and needs our attention more than ever before to broaden the genetic base of the cultivated crop varieties and to diversify the cropping pattern using the indigenous locally adapted landraces.
The science of genomics and the advent of advanced biotechnologies have opened the doors for successful utilization of these precious resources for developing varieties that are nutritionally rich, and climate-resilient possessing wider adaptability with high yields.
On World Biodiversity Day, May 22, 2022, the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) is organizing a discussion with presentations from some of the internationally renowned experts in the field.
